Batman: Year One

This is my favorite "Year One" Story. It doesn't bother telling Batmans origin again, because seriously, who doesn't know it. And it practically Jim Gordan's story. If you know anything about Jim Gordan, you know he's the biggest badass in Gotham. In my opinion, he's cooler than Batman.

Captain America: Reborn

This is a six part series that continues after the events of "Civil War". Spoiler alert Captain America "dies" at the end of Civil War and this is the story of how he returns to life.

This story shows Bucky as the current Captain that has to stay hidden from Norman Osborne and his Dark Avengers, while trying to save his teammates from the Red Skull, who has managed to survive, despite his body being dead.

As always, it ends on a cliff hanger. But that leads, possibly, into another post.

Wonder Woman 1-12 (New 52)

In the New 52, Wonder Woman has to fight against the forces of Hades, Hera, and Poseidon. It's pretty damn action packed and I love the story involving the greek gods. It really fits in with Wonder Woman's theme. Basically, she spends the story trying to save the child of Zeus that happens to also be the last Amazon. Whoa.

Spiderman: Reign

I'm on a little bit of a Spiderman kick right now. This is a story of Spiderman as an older man. He lives in a world were all masks are outlawed. Good or bad, there are no more supers. He has given up webslinging, but has to return to it to save the town for a new incarnation of the Sinister Six, know as the Sinner Six. A bunch of his villains, also aged.

Assassin's Creed: The Fall

This post is to review the Wildstorm/ubisoft Brainchild that is "Assassin's Creed: The fall". This three part comic tails the stories of two new people, Subject Four (Daniel Cross) who, in 1988, is reliving the memories of Nikolai Orelov, a Russian assassin who reigned in 1880.
Part one opens with Nikolai battling Templar agents to gain control of a powerful Holy relic, hidden within Moscow's walls. This first edition leads to a metaphorical Boss fight with Tzar Alexander the Third. The fight is a clash of swords and hidden blades aboard a speeding bullet train.
Nikolai boards the train and fights
Part two picks up with a plot of Nikolai's to attack a Templar research station in Siberia, which leads, happily enough, to the Tunguska event (a large explosion killing thousands). Meanwhile in modern (1988) time, Daniel is attempting to gather history on the assassin's order.
Tunguska Event as shown in "The Fall"
Part three is where it takes a dramatic turn for the worst. Daniel meets with the modern mentor of the assassin's creed, and kills him, because you then find that Daniel was an Abstergo (Templar organization) sleeper agent brainwashed to kill the mentor at around the age of 7.
All in all a very good fast paced read that is sure to make "Assassin's Creed" fans happy.

Batman: Under the Red Hood

This post relates not to a comic, but to a DC Classic animated movie, "Under the Red Hood". Now with Comic book related movies, comes a lot of incorrect hooha. However, this movie does not. There are a few minor details that are focused on more, and a few comic related moments that are ignored, but overall it gets the point across.
The story opens in a warehouse were The joker is beating Jason Todd ( second Robin now deceased) to death with a crowbar. Joker leaves, and a bomb goes off killing Jason right as Batman arrives. Cuts to modern day, Batman meets the new Red Hood in a rooftop chase sequence, and loses him, but through voice clarity, finds that The Hood calls him Bruce. So after a sequence of Black Mask and the Red Hood having a turf war, The Black Mask sends in the Fearsome Hand of Four to fight the Red Hood, and is then met by Batman, and the two square off against the Four, and after a victory, Red Hood vanishes leaving a single drop of Blood on one of the Four's swords.
So then metaphorical feces fan slinging happens. DNA matches the blood to that of Jason Todd, which leads to the sympathetic vendetta to save Jason from this new life of crime. At this point, Black Mask has gone into cahoots with the Joker, who has put, not only Black Mask but, all of the Black Mask's goons into a truck bed, filled with gasoline, and drops a lighter. His plan to... well... his lack of plan was then thwarted by the Batman who douses the flame with a Batplane projected fire extinguisher. Batman then grapple hooks the Joker from the truck and begins to carry him away, until the Red Hood cuts the Joker free and escapes with him.
The two Meet up in Crime Alley and Chase through the streets until they crash through the wall of an abandoned apartments bathroom, where batman brakes the wall of a bathtub, the wall of the toilet, and the wall... with Jason Todd's head. Jason then holds a gun to Batman and reveals that he has captured the Joker, and demands Batman shoot the latter. Batman refuses and leaves.
The majority aforementioned is absolutely accurate. Thus Under the Red Hood is a good watch for all you diehard Batfans.

Justice League #1 Reeboot

In the world of geeky comic fandom, there's a lot of controversy. Most of which stems from external media sources, i.e. Diehard Batman fans attempting to swallow the movie the Dark knight. However once in a while the actual writers will do something so stupid (The infinite number of crisis that coccured, including "Infinite Crises", in the DC universe) that people get angry. The latest of those crazy things was (In all caps represents yelling) DC RE-BOOTED THE ENTIRE COMPANY! Everything started over! The first of the baby comics that i've read, was The Justice League #1.

Now I'm going to be honest, when I picked this up, I had a negative notion to begin with. But the odd thing is I really didn't mind it. Like all new series there were good and bad things, but lets focus on the good. In the original justice league appearance (The Brave and the Bold #28) it was far to campy to take the formation seriously. In this, characters such as Batman, The Green Lantern, and Superman, all have an actual personality. Batman with the brooding, GL with the arrogance, and Superman with the, well... Supermanlyness.
The story of this comic, revolves around two things. The formation of the league, and the introduction to a new villain. In this comic, I feel it should be noted, you only meet four members of the league. Batman, the Green Lantern, Victor Stone (Cyborg), and Superman. The Green Lantern Is in patrol in Gotham based on reports of an extra terrestrial threat. He is then approached by The Batman, who is both condescending and judgmental, and knows Hal by name. They are then confronted by what appears to be a cyborg lizard man. They chase it into the sewers to confront it and it shouts Hail darksied, and detonates a bomb blowing the sewer. So in this, they are introduced to the Leagues most dangerous foe, unknowingly. The two survive through Green Lantern's ring.
                                 Batman interrogates Darksied's minion
Due to the alien nature of the minion, the two, go to Metropolis (where we see football player Victor Stone "Cyborg") to explore a potential lead, the alien who fell from the sky, that people consistently call the Superman, who then fight the two at the end of the comic.

Batman: Hush

A great story about Hush, the man who can out think Batman. For anyone that knows Batman, that's a big deal. How do you surprise that man that is prepared for all instabilities?

JSA: Liberty Files

This blog relates to a DC time bender called "JSA: Liberty Files. This comic is about a what if world in which the JSA were heroes and spies helping fight the Axis Powers in an underground race for time.
This story focuses around three main characters. The Owl (Doctor Mid-nite), The Clock (Hourman) and the Bat (Batman), who are all three intelligence seekers for the U.S. armed forces.
(From top) The Clock, The Bat, And The Owl
In part one, They are tailing a German smuggler Jack the Grin (The Joker) who is carrying plans for a German secret weapon. They intercept him in Egypt, and recover the plans, only finding that the plans reveal the "ümbermensch" or in German, the Superman.
                                                           Jack the Grin
Part two, starts on a sadder note. The Owl had been injured in a previous battle with the Germans and is recovering in the hospital when is killed by a German assassin. They (Now the Bat and the Clock) meet with a Swiss liaison, Terry Sloane, known as Mister Terrific.  However a German agent known as the Scarecrow bursts in and begins to fight Sloane, and during the struggle, Sloane's wife is killed. Then Sloane dons the Mister Terrific Alter-ego, and joins the Bat and The Clock , who all hunt down and kill the Scarecrow. (All the while Batman had been writing his thoughts in a small black journal, and when asked what he was writing, he responded with "nothing" and proceeded to burn the journal. Classic Batman moment.)
                                                  The Scarecrow
The Bat then travels to Egypt, and confronts the German Superman, revealed to be the Martian Manhunter, who do to his ability to absorb thoughts from other people, Jon had only known Hitler's obscured and hate filled thought of the world. So Batman Dons a Jet-Pack, flys into the middle of the Germans rally, and touches The Martian Manhunter, who then sees that Hitler is... well.... a crazy murderer. So he then decides to join the allies. Batman stopped the release of the German superman just in time, for had he not, the allies were going to release the actual Superman.

Part Three and forward will come later.

The Darkness

This post, ladies and gentleman, is about utter evil bent into something good. The Darkness. Not so recently, a critically acclaimed first person shooter based around this Top Cow comic phenomenon was released 6/25/07. And the sequel followed after this month, with a surprising review. With a comic book video game/ movie, questions get raised. I'm writing this article to clear some of those questions up.
The basic plot synopsis of the comic book series "The Darkness" revolves around your typical, orphaned, mafia raised, mass murdering hitman named Jackie Estacado. Orphaned at a young age, he was picked up from St. Gerard's orphanage by the Franchetti family, and trained to be a deadly hitman, nicknamed "Kill the children" Estacado. Later to find out that his training was just a pawn movement by the Omnipotent Darkness, but I'll get to that in just a second. Through his youth, he lived the life of a well paid hitman. Losing his virginity at fourteen... during an investigation... to the investigating officer, making his first successful hit at the age of sixteen, he was geared for a life of death dealing. Still nothing could prepare him for his twenty first birthday. In tradition, the Estacado family has been plagued (some would say blessed) by the power of the darkness. As mentioned on Comicshine before, DC's the Blackest Night touches on the ideology of the pre-biblical life bringing light's existence by a dark overlord of sorts called Nekron. Same idea, only the black of time is known in The Darkness, as, what do you guess, The Darkness. An omnipotent god like character, whose power is beyond that of limitations. Two limitations. (If only the Sentry had a few of those) His power can only be harnessed through a human host (go back to where the darkness organizes Jackie's Hitman training) generally manifesting at the age of twenty one, and that host can only access those powers in darkness.
His powers include, but aren't limited to, Darkness manipulation, Superhuman strength/agility/senses, Energy projection, Flight through wings of darkness, regenerative abilities, creation of objects out of the Darkness' power (Dark essence) i.e. guns and swords, and the ability (Go back to where I said God-like) to create life. He has been known to create small creatures with weapons called Darklings, a large Dragon, and Snake like creatures which can grow out of his back.
Now with his past and history of violence, the question is raised as to why he is considered a hero. Well, he fought alongside Batman in the Unholy Union series, and is convinced to use his powers for good.
  Differences in the video game:

  • The "snake heads" aren't generally things Jackie uses.
  • His Trench coat wardrobe is a strictly origin costume. His real costume is a green, yellow, and black, dark enveloped skintight organic suit.
  • He actually has wings that are created by the Darkness, and he flies quite often.
  • Jackie's mafia lord in the first game, Uncle Paulie, was actually a minor character, and was his cousin.

As With a lot of dark heroes, his enemies out number his allies. His allies include people like Batman, Superman, Ghost Rider, His very own power supply, And members of the Franchetti Family mob. He has been known to have a romantic complacency with Sara Pezzini, the wielder of the Witch Blade. His enemies consist of The Angelis, who is, by all means, the antithesis of the darkness. Also known as the Light of Heaven. Has almost the exact powers of the Darkness, including the Human host. Of whom was Jackies Adopted Mother Lauren Franchetti. Other foes include a power hungry anti-darkness group known as the brotherhood, and mainly everyone in every opposing mob group.

So I hope that this brief summary has helped clear the air about a very well written character, who hasn't gotten the recognition I believe he deserves.

Gritty and dark, it's a drama, about war, that isn't from the perspective of soldiers or superheros. Just a no name reporter that does what he thinks needs to be done. A damn good read, one of my favorite comics personally.
